Just last summer more than 100 of Cigna's self-insured health plan clients were sued with the complaint alleging breach of the defendants’ fiduciary duties under ERISA for engaging in widespread fraudulent behavior involving the use of plan funds. 

Davenport writes, "The wake-up call has to do with fiduciary duties arising under ERISA. These duties include acting solely in the interests of the participants and beneficiaries and avoiding conflicts of interest; administering the plan in accordance with plan terms (subject to ERISA); acting for the exclusive purpose of providing plan benefits or for defraying reasonable plan administration expenses; and acting prudently."

Express Scripts Takes Stab at Reducing Opioid Abuse

Today's blog features the St. Louis Public Radio article that highlights Express Scripts' role in tackling opioid abuse. ESI made the announcement last week at their annual conference in Dallas. Their plan? Creating a program that focuses on limiting exposure to pain killers and gives patients access to specialty-pharmacists to ensure the drugs are being used properly. This initiative has been designed for people who are being prescribed pain killers for the first time.

"If you can keep somebody from being addicted in the first place, that's where you can have the greatest impact," Henry told St. Louis Public Radio. "And that really is where Express Scripts is putting this program together - is focusing on that initial touchpoint for people who are new to treatment to make sure they get the medicine they need, and don't get more medicine than they need that could cause them to eventually become addicted."

Inside Express Scripts, Technology Lab Invents What's Next For Patients

Heather Lee Whitley of Dell Technologies recently wrote an article that highlights the new technology being rolled out for patients courtesy of Express Scripts. Whitley describes, "Doctors refer to the challenge of patients not taking medication as directed as “non-adherence” — and it’s not only a serious impediment to wellness, but it’s also a significant contributor to rising health care costs." Over $300 billion in total waste in adherence occurs on an annual basis in the United States. 

How do we combat this? Mark Bini, Vice Rresident, New Solutions at Express Scripts has created technology that highlights patients at the highest risk of non-adherence. 

Whitley continues, "The technology explores 300 known factors about the patient, doctor and disease to pinpoint why a particular patient is at risk. Once the patient has been identified, Express Scripts can deliver the proper counseling and messaging to that person."
